“When I was diagnosed with prostate cancer, I was terrified. One of the hardest things is that although I was given options, I wasn’t told which one to take. The decision had to be mine. I was worried about being incontinent after the operation, so keyhole surgery appealed to me because the risk of incontinence is reduced.  The fact that Alan Doherty had carried out so many of these operations certainly reassured me. The operation was so successful, it was unbelievable. I remember feeling a little bit sore, but there was little pain and I was back at home within two days.”

The Birmingham Prostate Clinic was founded in January 2006 by Consultant Urologist Mr Alan Doherty.

Mr Doherty’s vision was to establish a clinic with a multi-disciplinary team of leading specialists in urology.“Treatments for prostate cancer have developed rapidly during the past ten years,” explains Mr Doherty.“There are now many different treatments, but they are not all widely available in the UK. “This means patients and their families can face some difficult choices and seek advice in several different hospitals. “The aim behind our clinic is to provide all the established, advanced treatments in a single, comprehensive service.”

Mr Doherty is one of the few urologists in the UK who regularly performs all the different treatments for prostate cancer. Having completed more than 400 laparoscopic (keyhole) prostatectomies, Mr Doherty is one of the most experienced surgeons in this field within the country.
