Treatments for Prostate Cancer
The Birmingham Prostate Clinic provides a range of new treatments for advanced prostate cancer. Ahmed El-Modir, Consultant Oncologist for Birmingham Prostate Clinic explains: “It is a real challenge to treat advanced prostate cancer. Patients experience pain, anemia and fatigue and you really need a multi-modality treatment to meet the individual needs of each patient.” The Birmingham Prostate Clinic offers the full range of established and new approaches including external beam radiotherapy, hormone therapy, chemotherapy for advanced disease (Docetaxel, Taxotere) and Bisphosphonates (Zometa, Zoledronic Acid which involve an intravenous injection every 3 – 4 weeks. Two radioactive isotopes are available to reduce pain and complications from advanced prostate cancer; Strontium-89 and Samarium-153 have been found to be successful in pain relief for 70 - 80 per cent of patients.
Treatments for Kidney Cancer (Renal Cell Carcinoma)
The Birmingham Prostate Clinic offers the two new biological therapies which are transforming the treatment of kidney cancer. Nexavar and Sutent are both licensed for use in advanced kidney cancer. Ahmed El-Modir, Consultant Oncologist for the Prostate Clinic explains: “These breakthrough drugs are as significant for kidney cancer patients as Herceptin is for breast cancer patients.” They work on specific targets within the cancer cells which have been shown to be far more effective than immunotherapy, which has been the standard treatment. Studies show patients on these new biological therapies have better response and survival rates than those on immunotherapy.” External Beam Radiotherapy is also offered to kidney cancer patients and immunotherapy (Interferon, Interleukin).
Treatments for Bladder Cancer
The Birmingham Prostate Clinic provides treatment for all stages of bladder cancer including surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
