Continence results

Continence is a recognised complication of prostatectomy. However, surgeons with extensive experience of laparoscopic techniques are able to achieve a much improved anastomosis, or reconnection between the bladder and urethra after removing the prostate.

By three months, 82 per cent of patients are dry and this figure is 92 per cent by six months. Continence is measured in terms of use of pads. This is the best measurement, but is inevitably a little subjective, as some patients will take a more cautious approach to wearing pads than others.

The data shows that continence returns gradually, although the recovery is normally quicker than erectile recovery.
