Mr Alan Doherty PictureMr Alan Doherty completed his undergraduate training at The Middlesex Hospital before undergoing his surgical training at the Royal Marsden and Charing Cross Hospitals in London. He also studied at The Institute of Urology before taking up his position as a Consultant Urologist at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, the largest urological cancer centre in the West Midlands, in 2001. He has published extensively on prostate cancer including articles in the Lancet. Mike FosterMike Foster qualified in Birmingham in 1980, undertook general surgical training and research in Nottingham before moving to Manchester to concentrate on urology. He returned to Birmingham in 1991. In 1992, he was appointed to the post of Consultant Urologist at Selly Oak and Queen Elizabeth Hospitals. In 1995 Mr Foster moved to Good Hope Hospital in Sutton Coldfield to help set up their urology department, and has been there since. As well as running a busy general urological practice, he has developed a special interest in andrology, attracting tertiary referrals from around the region. He has been Trust Lead Cancer Clinician and Clinical Director of the Department of Surgery at Good Hope, as well as being Chair of the pan-Birmingham Urological Cancer Network. He is currently a member of the pan-Birmingham Cancer Network Board, Regional Advisor in Urology to the Royal College of Surgeons and the British Association of Urological Surgeons, and secretary of the Midland Urological Club.
Nula Allen PictureNula Allen is an Advanced Nurse practitioner. Nula combines her work for The Birmingham Prostate Clinic with her role as Lead Cancer Nurse and Urology Clinical Nurse specialist at Good Hope Hospital. In 2003 she gained her postgraduate diploma in Advanced Nursing Practice and was awarded “The Chairman’s annual award for Clinical excellence” in 2005. Nula regularly gives lectures at The University of Central England on Oncology and Continence and was responsible for setting up The Prostate Cancer Support Group in the North of Birmingham.
Christopher Luscombe pictureChristopher Luscombe graduated from Birmingham in 1992 and completed his surgical training in the West Midlands. He has a particular interest in prostate cancer and initiated a research programme investigating the molecular genetics of prostate cancer. He has published widely and received an MD in 2003 for his thesis on prostate cancer research. He was appointed as a Consultant Urological surgeon at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire in 2005.
Ahmed El-ModirAhmed El-Modir gained his MRCP in 1997 before becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of Radiologists in 2002. He is a Consultant in Clinical Oncology at University Hospital Birmingham and has a particular interest in radiotherapeutic treatment of Prostate cancer including external beam conformal radiotherapy and seed brachytherapy. Ahmed is also experienced in the medical treatment of prostate cancer using hormones and chemotherapy and is actively involved in clinical research.
Ian McCafferty pictureIan McCafferty graduated from University College Hospital London in 1989, gained his MRCP and completed his postgraduate training in The West Midlands. He is a Fellow of The Royal College of Radiologists and in 1998 undertook a fellowship in urogenital radiological minimal invasive surgery in Oxford. Ian is a Consultant radiologist at University Hospital and is a member of The Board of The British Society of Urogenital Radiology.
Mick Hughes pictureMick Hughes graduated at Birmingham University Medical school and completed his post graduate surgical training in the West Midlands. He became a Consultant Urologist at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham in 1977. His specialist interests include the management of benign prostate disorders and endoscopic stone surgery. He was responsible for the introduction to the West Midlands of upper urinary tract laser treatment of stones and is an ex chairman of The West Midlands Urological training programme. Mick has represented the region at The British Association of Urological Surgeons.
