PSA thresholds for prostate cancer risk assessment
The Prostate Cancer Risk Management Programme recommends the following thresholds for referring men for suspected prostate cancer.
This means any man whose PSA result is higher than the recommended threshold is considered to have an ‘elevated PSA’. Having an elevated PSA does not mean you have prostate cancer, or that you are necessarily at a high risk.
It does mean that prostate cancer should be considered and that further assessments, often carried out by a urologist, are advised.
Recommended PSA level thresholdsAge | PSA level threshold |
---|---|
40–49 years | 2.0 nanogram/mL or higher |
50–59 years | 3.0 nanogram/mL or higher |
60–69 years | 4.0 nanogram/mL or higher |
70–79 years | 5.0 nanogram/mL or higher |
80+ | No age-specific reference limits |
