BPC’s Alan Doherty is praised by MP during Prime Minister’s Question Time

Lichfield MP Michael Fabricant

Birmingham Prostate Clinic surgeon Alan Doherty has been praised and thanked by an MP during Prime Minister’s Question time this week.

Lichfield MP Michael Fabricant spoke of his experience of prostate cancer and the “simply wonderful” team at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, where he was treated.

“I want to thank all the team at the QE including my surgeon Alan Doherty and excellent specialist prostate nurse Richard Gledhill who gave me advice,” Mr Fabricant told the House of Commons.

Mr Doherty combines his role at the QE, the largest urology service in the region, with his work at the Birmingham Prostate Clinic.

It was the first time that the well-known Lichfield MP, who is 66, has spoken out about his experience of prostate cancer.

“Eighteen months ago, my wonderful doctor Helen Stokes Lampard suggested I have a general well-man check-up,” he told the House.

“And it is just as well that I did because it revealed that there could have been, and there was a problem with my prostate, despite the fact that I was symptom free.

“I was immediately referred to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham who were simply wonderful and after a period of surveillance, I had a prostatectomy back in June.

“But hey, I’m fine. And I want to thank all the team at the QE including my surgeon Alan Doherty and excellent specialist prostate nurse Richard Gledhill who gave me advice.”

Mr Fabricant spoke of the importance of the specialist help, support and advice provided by urology nurses.

After his speech in the House, Mr Fabricant commented further: “I chose to raise this matter at Prime Minister’s questions because early diagnosis is vital and I hope by highlighting this issue, it may have saved a few lives,” he said.

“Because it was caught quick, I have not needed any drugs nor chemotherapy nor have I needed any radiation, thank goodness. The changes in my prostate were at an early stage and following a prostatectomy back in June, I am now in the clear.”
