The results of a major study of GreenLight laser treatment for BPH show a large majority of patients are very positive about the procedure.

Questionnaires were sent out to patients who have had GreenLight laser surgery for BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia), also known as an enlarged prostate.

They were asked how they felt about the results of their treatment.

More than 400 patients have had GreenLight laser treatment at BPC since it was first introduced in 2007.

A total of 100 patients said they were “delighted”, a further 43 said they were “pleased” and 46 said they were “mostly satisfied.”

Additionally, 17 stated they were “neither disatisfied or satisfied”, while nine said they were “dissatisfied”, six were “unhappy” and three reported feeling “terrible”.

This means that overall, 189 patients had a positive outcome, 18 had a negative outcome and 17 had a neutral outcome from treatment.

BPC Consultant Urologist Alan Doherty, who has carried out one of the largest series of GreenLight laser procedures in the UK, said: “We are very committed to evaluating outcomes for patients in a meaningful and accessible way.

“This helps us to understand and refine the surgical techniques we use and enables men considering a procedure to make a more informed decision about whether to have that treatment.”

GreenLight laser was first introduced at BPC in 2007 as a minimally-invasive alternative to the traditional TURP procedure. Both are surgical approaches designed to reduce surplus prostate tissue and restore normal urine flow.

“We know that GreenLight laser has many benefits in terms of quicker recovery time. There is far less blood loss, tissue damage and bruising and patients are pain free and able to return to normal activities much more quickly than after a TURP,” says Mr Doherty.

“What we want to know from this study is how effective GreenLight laser is in the long term. We are very pleased that for a large majority of our patients, this approach has been very effective and they are delighted, pleased, or happy to have had the procedure.”
