Peter Hale is a 70-year-old from Birmingham. He was referred to the Birmingham Prostate Clinic for assessments after finding blood in his urine. Mr Hale had a series of tests, including the new genetics-based PCA3 assessment. His prostate was found to be benign and Mr Hale is now on active monitoring.

Nerve-sparing prostatectomy

Dr Richard Commander is a 55-year-old GP from Shropshire. He was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer and had a nerve-sparing prostatectomy, which is a type of procedure designed to reduce the side effects of surgery. A traditional prostatectomy, or removal of the prostate, often causes long term erectile dysfunction and incontinence problems. A nerve-sparing prostatectomy significantly reduces these complications, safely removing the cancerous prostate but limited damage to nearby nerves.
