Mrs Maya Harris
Mrs Maya Harris studied at the Medical Academy of Latvia and University of Edinburgh, then worked and trained in hospitals in the north of England, including the renowned The Christie Hospital in Manchester, the largest single site cancer centre in Europe. At The Christie, Maya undertook a fellowship, the highest form of specialist training, concentrating on urological cancers.
She is a member of the Royal College of Surgeons and at the European Urology Association, won the Campbell Prize for urological expertise. Maya has a master’s degree in translational medicine: the aim of applying laboratory research to clinical work with patients. Her work was focused on biomarkers to predict prostate cancer risk.
Maya was appointed to her current post, consultant urologist for Warwick Hospital, in 2013. She covers all forms of general urology including treatment for recurrent urinary tract infections and urgency/urge incontinence. Maya is one of a small number of female consultant urologists. She was one of the first UK surgeons to undertake the UroLift procedure for benign prostatic hyperplasia and has now carried out one of the highest volumes of the procedures in the Midland region.
“I would define my individual ethos as being very approachable for patients. Good communication is vital in medicine and I take pride in making patients feel comfortable and able to talk openly. Women can be happier to see a female urologist, although equally, I see many male patients. My passion is for translational medicine and I am excited about the way new biomarkers are transforming the way we understand and predict prostate cancer.”
Maya consults privately as a BPC consultant at Nuffield Health Warwickshire Hospital.
